M.Ed. in Curriculum & Instruction: Science Education

The M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis on Science Education helps educators extend their knowledge and skills in science teaching, science content, and science education research. Course work focuses on exemplary science education practices for elementary, middle, and high school teachers, and may be appropriate for people interested in science education in other settings (e.g., museums, nature centers). Students complete a minimum of 30 credits.

Students are strongly encouraged to meet with an academic adviser to plan course selections.

Core courses (9 credits)

  • CI 400: Introduction to Research Literature or CI 501: Teaching as Inquiry
  • CI 550: Overview of Contemporary School Curriculum
  • EDPSY 421: Learning Processes in Relation to Educational Practices or ADTED 505: The Teaching of Adults

Emphasis courses (9 credits)

Choose any three SCIED courses:

  • SCIED 551: History, Philosophy and Sociology of Science and Science Teaching
    SCIED 558: Research Problems in Science Teaching
    SCIED 597: Environmental Science Education
  • SCIED 597: Science Content for Teachers - Food Science
  • SCIED 597: Strategies for Science Teaching & Assessment
  • SCIED 597: Nature of Science and Evolution

Related courses (6 credits)

You may choose related courses from the SCIED courses listed above that you have not taken and/or from the following courses or their equivalent:

Electives courses (3 credits)

Students, in consultation with their academic adviser, complete one course outside Curriculum and Instruction.  Choose from the following courses or their equivalent:

  • SPLED 404: Working with Families and Professionals in Special Education
  • SPLED 425: Foundations of Special Education, Etiologies, Law, and Implications for Practice
    BIOL 497: Conservation Biology (offered through Penn State Lehigh Valley)

Research Project (3 credits)

After completing approximately 21 credits in the program, students carry out an applied research project (e.g., software development and testing mini-course development and evaluation, or classroom-based action research) under the supervision of a faculty adviser.  Please consult your academic adviser for details, including the deadlines for research project submission.

CI 596: Individual Studies
